An Act To Permit Tribal Members To Have Access to Wood Fiber for Fuel, Shelter and Traditional Woodcraft Production

Sec. 1. 30 MRSA §6215  is enacted to read:

§ 6215.  Access to wood and wood fiber

Notwithstanding any other provision of law, a member of the Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians, the Passamaquoddy Tribe or the Penobscot Nation may enter and collect or harvest wood or wood fiber from any public or publicly controlled or managed property in the State for the purpose of using the wood or wood fiber for fuel, personal shelter construction or traditional woodcraft production.

Sec. 2. 30 MRSA §7208  is enacted to read:

§ 7208.  Access to wood and wood fiber

Notwithstanding any other provision of law, a member of the Aroostook Band of Micmacs may enter and collect or harvest wood or wood fiber from any public or publicly controlled or managed property in the State for the purpose of using the wood or wood fiber for fuel, personal shelter construction or traditional woodcraft production.

SUMMARY

This bill allows any member of the Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians, the Passamaquoddy Tribe, the Penobscot Nation or the Aroostook Band of Micmacs to enter and collect or harvest wood or wood fiber from any public or publicly controlled or managed property in the State for the purpose of using the wood or wood fiber for fuel, personal shelter construction or traditional woodcraft production.
