In Memory of:

 

            (5-34)  Omer R. Parent, Jr., of Lewiston.  Mr. Parent was a veteran of the United States Air Force, who was deployed to Pleiku, Vietnam from 1967 to 1968.  For his outstanding service as an EC-47 Airborne Radio Intercept Operator, he received the Distinguished Flying Cross on February 25, 1968.  He worked for over 30 years at General Electric, where he was an inspector and dispatcher.  He also worked in security and safety at Bates College for over 20 years.  For more than 35 years, he volunteered as the football clock operator at Lewiston High School football games.  Mr. Parent will be long remembered and sadly missed by his family, friends and community;

            (5-35)  Maureen Willard Harper, of South Portland.  Ms. Harper worked at New England Telephone Company in the business office and in the research library at the Portland Press Herald.  She was a longtime volunteer at the South Portland Food Cupboard, a devout parishioner at Holy Cross Church and a regular at the South Portland Community Center.  Ms. Harper will be long remembered and sadly missed by her family, friends and community;

            (5-36)  Martha Ann (Dyro) Pillsbury, of South Portland.  Mrs. Pillsbury served as a public school teacher, spending the majority of her teaching career working in South Portland elementary schools, including Redbank and Dyer, as a reading interventionist.  After retiring, she became an active advocate for retired teachers, volunteering many hours of service and holding various officer positions for the Cumberland County Retired Educators Association, the Maine Education Association - Retired and the Maine chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons.  In 2003, she received the MEA-R Excellence Award from the National Retired Teachers Association and in 2006 the MEA-R Cumberland County Leadership Award.  Mrs. Pillsbury will be long remembered and sadly missed by her family, friends and community;

            (5-37)  David Whitney Small, of Old Town.  Mr. Small served in the United States Navy from 1973 to 1978.  He began his career with Daigle Oil Company in Fort Kent before returning home to Bangor, where he worked at the Bangor Daily News from 1986 until his retirement in 2004.  Mr. Small will be long remembered and sadly missed by his family, friends and community;

            (5-38)  Elaine Elizabeth Regan, of Old Orchard Beach.  Mrs. Regan devoted her entire 35-year career to Unum, where she was known for her loyalty and strong work ethic and the meaningful relationships she formed along the way.  Mrs. Regan will be long remembered and sadly missed by her family, friends and community;

            (5-39)  Stanley Howe, of Bethel.  Dr. Howe, who held a doctorate in Canadian history from the University of Maine, dedicated much of his life to preserving Bethel-area history.  He served as curator and executive director of the Bethel Historical Society for 36 years, from 1974 to 2010.  Under his leadership, the society expanded its focus to include the history of western Maine and the White Mountain region of Maine and New Hampshire.  He increased the society's endowment and wrote and lectured on many subjects related to Maine history.  Although he retired at the end of 2012, he continued to volunteer at the Museums of the Bethel Historical Society for many more years.  He was a member and, at one time, the master of the Alder River Grange, and he served his community as a Bethel selectman.  He received the Bethel Area Chamber of Commerce's Henry H. Hastings Award for Citizenship and Gould Academy's Alumnus of the Year Award.  The Bethel Rotary Club also recognized him as a Paul Harris Fellow.  Dr. Howe will be long remembered and sadly missed by his family, friends and community;

            (5-40)  Michael P. O'Donnell, of Scarborough.  Earning his doctorate from Syracuse University, Dr. O'Donnell dedicated his professional life to advancing literacy and expanding access to education.  He began his career as a high school English teacher in Aroostook County and quickly distinguished himself as an innovator.  Long before educational television was common, he developed and taught High School Reading, a live broadcast course that became a pilot project for the State Department of Education.  Its success led to a Ford Foundation grant to videotape the series for national distribution.  In 1970, he joined the faculty of the University of Southern Maine's College of Education.  A lifelong advocate for literacy, he dedicated his career to improving reading education for children, adults, and refugees learning English as a second language.  A highlight of his professional life was serving as a national Scholar-in-Residence with the United States Department of Education in Washington, D.C.  He authored and co-authored numerous books and instructional materials and received many professional honors, including a Distinguished Service Award from the University of Maine Board of Trustees for advancing literacy.  He retired with distinction as Professor Emeritus.  Dr. O'Donnell will be long remembered and sadly missed by his family, friends and community;
