Sec. 1. 29-A MRSA §456-A is enacted to read:

§456-A.__Emergency medical technician registration plates

1.__Issuance of emergency medical technician registration plates.__The Secretary of State, upon receiving an application and evidence of payment of the excise tax required by Title 36 and the registration fee required by this Title, may issue a registration certificate and a set of emergency medical technician registration plates to be used in lieu of regular registration plates.__The Secretary of State may issue emergency medical technician registration plates for a vehicle in any registration class if the designated registration plate for that class does not preclude its use in conjunction with the emergency medical technician registration plates.

2.__Plate design; optional vanity plates.__The Secretary of State shall consult with a professional organization of emergency medical technicians to determine the plate design.__The design must include the initials "EMT," bear the "star of life" logo and accommodate the use of numbers and letters as provided in section 453.__The letters and design must be predominately blue in color.__ Upon request and as provided by section 453, the Secretary of State shall issue emergency medical technician registration plates that are also vanity plates.__The annual service fee of $15 for vanity plates is credited to the Highway Fund.

3.__Eligibility.__A person who applies for emergency medical technician registration plates must document to the Secretary of State that that person is a certified emergency medical services provider or is affiliated with a public or private emergency medical services agency.__If a person ceases to be an emergency medical technician, the person shall return the plates to the Secretary of State.
