Sec. 1. 20-A MRSA §4722-A is enacted to read:

§4722-A.__High school diploma standards for World War II Veterans

Notwithstanding section 4722, a secondary school may award a high school diploma to a person who is a resident of a municipality served by that secondary school if that person:

1.__Started secondary school.__Started secondary school between 1937 and 1946;

2.__Inducted into Armed Forces.__Was inducted into the Armed Forces of the United States between September 16, 1940 and December 31, 1946;

3.__Scheduled to graduate from secondary school.__Had been scheduled to graduate from secondary school between 1941 and 1950; and

4.__Honorably discharged.__Received an honorable discharge from the Armed Forces of the United States.

SUMMARY

This bill permits a secondary school to award a diploma to a veteran whose secondary school education was interrupted by service in the Armed Forces of the United States during World War II.
