| | | Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine as follows: |

| | | Sec. 1. 20-A MRSA §4722-A is enacted to read: |

| | | §4722-A.__High school diploma standards for World War II veterans |
|
| | | Notwithstanding section 4722, a secondary school may award a | | high school diploma to a person who is a resident of a | | municipality served by that secondary school or who attended that | | secondary school if that person: |
|
| | | 1.__Started secondary school.__Started secondary school | | between 1937 and 1946; |
|
| | | 2.__Served in Armed Forces.__Left secondary school to serve in | | the Armed Forces of the United States between September 16, 1940 | | and December 31, 1946; |
|
| | | 3.__Did not receive high school diploma.__Did not receive a | | high school diploma as a consequence of service in the Armed | | Forces of the United States; and |
|
| | | 4.__Honorably discharged.__Received an honorable discharge | | from the Armed Forces of the United States. |
|
| | | A secondary school may award a high school diploma | | posthumously. |
|
| | | This bill permits a secondary school to award a diploma to a | | person who started secondary school between 1937 and 1946, left | | secondary school to serve in the Armed Forces of the United | | States, did not receive a diploma as a consequence of this | | service and received an honorable discharge. |
