Sec. 1. 36 MRSA §581-F is enacted to read:

§581-F.__Penalty for foreign export

If the assessor determines that raw timber harvested from a parcel of land classified under this subchapter has been shipped to a location outside the United States, the assessor shall assess a penalty equal to 25% of the property taxes otherwise due under this Part with respect to the parcel for the tax year during which the shipment occurred.__The penalty must be assessed and collected in the same manner as a penalty assessed and collected under section 581.

SUMMARY

This bill requires the assessment and collection of a penalty if raw timber harvested from land subject to tree growth tax assessment is shipped outside the United States. The penalty is equal to 25% of the property taxes otherwise assessed on the land.
