Sec. 1. Appropriation. The following funds are appropriated from the General Fund to carry out the purposes of this Act.

Provides state funds to match a $2,000,000 federal grant to provide assistance in the planning and construction of the Downeast Heritage Center on the St. Croix River in Calais to promote tourism and economic growth in Washington County.

SUMMARY

This bill appropriates $2,000,000 from the General Fund to match $2,000,000 in federal National Park Service funds for the construction of a regional heritage center in Calais. St. Croix Island on the St. Croix River is one of only 2 international historic sites in the National Park System and was the first permanent European settlement in the New World in 1604. The heritage center is proposed for completion before the 400th anniversary of the settlement in 2004.
