| | | Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine as follows: |

| | | Sec. 1. 22 MRSA §2383-B, sub-§6 is enacted to read: |

| | | 6.__Agricultural use of hemp.__Notwithstanding any other | | provision of law, beginning July 1, 2002 a person may possess | | hemp used for agricultural purposes. |

| | | Sec. 2. Report. The Department of Agriculture, Food and Rural | | Resources and the Department of Public Safety shall examine the | | issue of legalizing the use of hemp for agricultural purposes and | | shall submit a report with implementing legislation that | | legalizes the use of hemp for agricultural purposes to the Second | | Regular Session of the 120th Legislature no later than January 1, | | 2002. |

| | | This bill permits a person to possess hemp used for | | agricultural purposes beginning July 1, 2002. It requires the | | Department of Agriculture, Food and Rural Resources and the | | Department of Public Safety to examine the issue of legalizing | | the use of hemp for agricultural purposes and to report with | | implementing legislation that legalizes the use of hemp for | | agricultural purposes to the Second Regular Session of the 120th | | Legislature no later than January 1, 2002. |
