| | | Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine as follows: |

| | | Sec. 1. 19-A MRSA §4007, sub-§1, ķA-2 is enacted to read: |

| | | A-2.__Ordering the surrender, to the court, of the | | defendant's concealed firearms permit for the duration of | | the order.__Upon the request of the defendant, within 10 | | days after the expiration of the order, the court shall | | return to the defendant the concealed firearms weapons | | permit; |

| | | Sec. 2. Application to federal agency. The Department of Public Safety, | | Bureau of State Police shall apply to the federal Bureau of | | Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms for approval to establish concealed | | firearms permits issued by the State pursuant to the Maine | | Revised Statutes, Title 25, chapter 252 as qualifying permits for | | purposes of bypassing federal background check requirements for | | firearms transactions. |

| | | This bill allows the court to order the surrender of a | | person's concealed firearms permit if the person is subject to a | | permanent protection order under the Maine Revised Statutes, | | Title 19-A, section 4007. The surrender may be for the duration | | of the order only, and the permit must be returned, at the | | person's request, within 10 days after the expiration of the | | order. |

| | | This bill also requires the Department of Public Safety, | | Bureau of State Police to apply to the Federal Government for | | approval to establish state-issued concealed firearms permits as | | qualifying permits for purposes of bypassing federal background | | check requirements for firearms transactions. |
