Sec. 1. 22 MRSA §1954 is enacted to read:

§1954.__Smoking cessation program

The department shall administer a smoking cessation program to provide information and incentives for pregnant women to cease or significantly decrease the amount of tobacco that they smoke and to decrease the by-products of tobacco that they ingest.__The program must provide information regarding smoking status, testing and cessation programs for health care providers and testing for smoking status of pregnant women.__The program also provides information, smoking cessation aids, including pharmacological aids, and incentives for pregnant women.__The program must include an evaluation component that includes the rates at which pregnant women smoke and the percentages of babies born with low birth weights.

SUMMARY

This bill requires the Department of Human Services to establish a smoking cessation program to decrease and eliminate smoking among pregnant women. The program must include information, testing and incentives. There must be an evaluation component that includes smoking rates and percentages of babies born with low birth weights.
