Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine as follows:

 
Sec. 1. 29-A MRSA §1406, sub-§§2-A and 2-B are enacted to read:

 
2-A.__Expiration of license; persons 75 years of age and
over.__Effective January 1, 2004, a license to operate a motor
vehicle issued to a person 75 years of age or older at the
date of issuance expires at midnight on that license holder's
2nd birthday following the date of issuance.

 
2-B.__Expiration of license; persons 80 years of age and
over.__Effective January 1, 2004, a license to operate a motor
vehicle issued to a person 80 years of age or older at the
date of issuance expires at midnight on that license holder's
first birthday following the date of issuance.

 
Sec. 2. 29-A MRSA §1406, sub-§6, as enacted by PL 1993, c. 683, Pt.
A, §2 and affected by Pt. B, §5, is amended to read:

 
6. Fee; 4-year, 2-year and one-year license. The fee for
the 4-year, 2-year and one-year license is $18. The fee for
the 4-year, 2-year and one-year commercial driver's license is
$25.

 
Sec. 3. 29-A MRSA §1406, sub-§7 is enacted to read:

 
7.__Physical examination; 2-year and one-year license.__A
person 75 years of age or older must successfully pass a
physical examination pursuant to section 1301, subsection 7 to
determine adequate reflexes, vision and response time in order
to be issued a driver's license or a commercial driver's
license.

 
SUMMARY

 
This bill requires that a person 75 years of age or older
renew the person's driver's license every 2 years and a person
80 years of age or older renew the person's license every
year. In order to renew the license, the person must pass a
physical exam that determines adequate reflexes, vision and
response time.
