Sec. 1. 29-A MRSA §470 is enacted to read:

§470.__Experimental vehicle registration plates

1.__Experimental vehicle plates authorized.__The Secretary of State may issue registration plates for experimental vehicles.__The plate may be used for one or more experimental vehicles during the term of the registration provided that those vehicles are owned by the person issued the registration plate.

2.__Limitations on use.__A person in the business of developing experimental vehicles may apply for experimental vehicle registration plates for the purpose of testing, demonstrating or transporting__experimental vehicles on public roadways.__The Secretary of State may determine the number and conditions of use of experimental vehicle registration plates and the fee for registration plates under this section.

SUMMARY

This bill establishes a registration plate for experimental vehicles to encourage the licensing of multiple experimental vehicles sharing a single plate, similar to a "dealer" plate, in order to reduce administrative costs in time and money for small entities.
