Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine as follows:

 
Sec. 1. 29-A MRSA §1910, as enacted by PL 1993, c. 683, Pt. A, §2
and affected by Pt. B, §5, is repealed and the following
enacted in its place:

 
§1910.__Rules governing lights on vehicles; replacement

 
1.__Replacement.__The Chief of the State Police shall adopt
rules governing the replacement of exterior lights on
passenger vehicles.__The rules may not be more restrictive
than the requirements specified in the federal motor vehicle
safety standards regarding the sale, installation and use of
aftermarket replacement lighting equipment as long as that
equipment meets the federal motor vehicle safety standards.

 
2.__Adjustment, use and operation.__Except as required in
subsection 1, the Chief of the State Police may adopt rules
governing the adjustment, use and operation of lights on
vehicles.

 
3.__Rulemaking.__Rules adopted pursuant to this section are
routine technical rules as defined in Title 5, chapter 375,
subchapter 2-A.

 
SUMMARY

 
This bill requires the Chief of the State Police within the
Department of Public Safety to adopt routine technical rules
regarding the replacement of exterior lights on passenger
vehicles. The rules may not be more restrictive than those
requirements specified in the federal motor vehicle safety
standards.
