| | | Sec. 1. 1 MRSA §1024 is enacted to read: |

| | | §1024.__Candidacy prohibited |
|
| | | 1.__Restrictions on candidacy for Legislature.__An employee of | | the State or a member of a union representing employees of the | | State may not become a candidate for the Legislature. |
|
| | | 2.__Restrictions on candidacy for offices elected by | | Legislature.__An outgoing member of the Legislature may not | | become a candidate for the office of Attorney General, Secretary | | of State, Treasurer of State or State Auditor. |
|
| | | Sec. 2. 21-A MRSA §8 is enacted to read: |

| | | §8.__Restrictions on activities |
|
| | | A person who receives income from the State, other than salary | | as a Legislator or state assistance, may not publicly participate | | in a campaign.__A person who occupies a position elected by the | | Legislature may not publicly participate in a campaign or endorse | | a candidate.__A union that represents employees of the State may | | not provide assistance or contributions on behalf of a candidate | | or ballot issue. |

| | | This bill prohibits employees of the State and members of | | government employee unions from running for the Legislature, | | outgoing Legislators from running for constitutional office or | | State Auditor, people who receive income from the State from | | publicly participating in a campaign, people who occupy positions | | elected by the Legislature from publicly participating in a | | campaign or endorsing candidates and government employee unions | | from assisting with or contributing to campaigns. |
