Sec. 1. 29-A MRSA §1301, sub-§10 is enacted to read:

10.__Proof of citizenship.__An applicant for a license must provide proof of citizenship or documentation of legal residency inside the United States.__If an applicant does not provide proof of citizenship or documention of legal residency, the Secretary of State shall notify the United States Department of Homeland Security, United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, or successor organization, that the applicant may be an undocumented illegal alien.

SUMMARY

This bill requires an applicant for a driver's license to provide proof of citizenship or documentation that the applicant is a legal resident in the United States. This bill also requires the Secretary of State to notify the United States Department of Homeland Security, United States Citizenship and Immigration Services if an applicant fails to provide such proof.
