Sec. 1. 22 MRSA §1911, as enacted by PL 2001, c. 654, §2, is repealed and the following enacted in its place:

§1911. Parental option

An administrator of a school shall notify a parent or guardian and obtain the written consent of that parent or guardian before that school provides comprehensive family life education to a child of that parent or guardian.__The administrator shall provide information to the parent or guardian regarding the content of the comprehensive family life education class, whether abstinence will be taught and whether homosexuality will be discussed.__The decision of a parent or guardian to not consent to the provision of comprehensive family life education to a child of that parent or guardian may not affect a grade given to that child.__A parent or guardian who does not consent to the provision of comprehensive family life education to a child of that parent or guardian shall provide a statement in writing to the school administrator that that parent or guardian has provided that child with age-appropriate sex education.

SUMMARY

This bill provides that an administrator of a school shall notify a parent or guardian and obtain the written consent of that parent or guardian before that school provides comprehensive family life education to a child of that parent or guardian.
