| | | Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine as follows: |

| | | Sec. 1. 2 MRSA §1, 3rd ¶, as enacted by PL 1985, c. 693, §1, is | | amended to read: |
|
| | | Until the first Wednesday of January 1987, the Governor shall | receive an annual salary of $35,000. Beginning Until the first | Wednesday of January 1987 2007, the Governor shall must receive | | an annual salary of $70,000. Beginning the first Wednesday of | | January 2007, the Governor must receive an annual salary that is | | 10% greater than the annual salary of any other official of State | | Government.__For purposes of this section, "official of State | | Government" means an employee of the executive branch, | | legislative branch, judicial branch, Department of the Attorney | | General, Department of the Secretary of State, Department of the | | Treasurer, Department of Audit, University of Maine System, Maine | | Community College System or Maine Maritime Academy or of any | | other state agency or independent agency. |

| | | Sec. 2. Application. This Act does not apply to the Governor who is | | serving on the effective date of this Act during that Governor's | | continuance in office. |

| | | This bill provides the Governor an annual salary that is 10% | | greater than the annual salary of any other official of State | | Government. In accordance with the Constitution of Maine, | | Article V, Part First, Section 6, the bill provides that it does | | not apply to the Governor who is serving on the effective date of | | the legislation during that Governor's continuance in office. |
