| This bill requires the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to create a stakeholder group to evaluate options for adapting to the most likely impacts of climate change. Further, the bill directs DEP to focus on the assessment by the University of Maine which concluded that climate change is already occurring. The DEP is to report recommendations along with proposed legislation by February 27, 2010. The additional costs to DEP associated with the development of the stakeholder group and other duties can be absorbed within the existing budgeted resources. However, the DEP is authorized to accept public and private funds for the costs incurred to prepare the report. If funds are forthcoming, the DEP may hire a consultant to assist with the economic impact study. If funds are not secured, the tasks will be completed by the department. | ||||||
