An Act To Require a Person To Carry Liability Insurance on a Snowmobile

Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine as follows:

Sec. 1. 12 MRSA §13104, sub-§2, as enacted by PL 2003, c. 414, Pt. A, §2 and affected by c. 614, §9, is amended to read:

2. Application and issuance. The commissioner or the commissioner's designee may register and assign a registration number to all snowmobiles upon application , providing of proof of financial responsibility and payment of a registration fee by the owner. The commissioner shall charge a fee of $1 for each registration issued by department employees.

Sec. 2. 29-A MRSA §1552, as enacted by PL 1993, c. 683, Pt. A, §2 and affected by Pt. B, §5, is amended to read:

§ 1552. Application

The provisions of this chapter do not apply to a snowmobile or an ATV, unless the ATV is registered for highway use. For purposes of this chapter, “motor vehicle” and “vehicle” include snowmobiles.

Sec. 3. 29-A MRSA §1553, as enacted by PL 1993, c. 683, Pt. A, §2 and affected by Pt. B, §5, is amended to read:

§ 1553. Administration

The Secretary of State shall administer and enforce this chapter , except as this chapter applies to a snowmobile, in which case this chapter is administered by the Commissioner of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

This bill applies to snowmobiles the same requirements for insurance and financial responsibility that apply to automobiles.
