An Act To Allow the Board of Dental Examiners To Issue Dental School Faculty Licenses

Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine as follows:

Sec. 1. 32 MRSA §1086-A  is enacted to read:

§ 1086-A Dental faculty licenses

1 Dental school faculty license.   The board may issue a dental school faculty license to an applicant who teaches dentistry, dental hygiene or denturism in this State as part of an American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation or a successor organization approved by the board for an accredited clinical and didactic program for professional education for dental students and dental residents, upon presentation by the applicant of satisfactory credentials, including a recommendation from an employing school of dentistry, indicating why the board should consider the applicant to be qualified under criteria established by rules adopted by the board.

An applicant for a dental school faculty license must hold a current dental, dental hygiene or denturism license within the United States or Canada. Dental school faculty licenses expire after 2 years and are renewable by the board. The board may assess a fee of up to $250 for a dental school faculty license and renewal. A dental school faculty license allows the licensee to practice only within the dental school setting, including any satellite locations approved by the board.

2 Dental hygiene school faculty license.   The board may issue a dental hygiene school faculty license to an applicant who teaches dental hygiene in this State as part of an American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation or a successor organization approved by the board for an accredited clinical and didactic program for professional education for dental hygiene students and dental hygiene residents, upon presentation by the applicant of satisfactory credentials, including a recommendation from an employing school of dental hygiene, indicating why the board should consider the applicant to be qualified under criteria established by rules adopted by the board.

3 Denturism school faculty license.   The board may issue a denturism school faculty license to an applicant who teaches denturism in this State as part of a board-approved clinical and didactic program for professional education for denturism students, upon presentation by the applicant of satisfactory credentials, including a recommendation from an employing school of denturism, indicating why the board should consider the applicant to be qualified under criteria established by rules adopted by the board.

An applicant for a denturism school faculty license must hold a current dental or denturism license within the United States or Canada. Denturism school faculty licenses expire after 2 years and are renewable by the board. The board may assess a fee of up to $250 for a denturism school faculty license and renewal. A denturism school faculty license allows the licensee to practice only within the denturism school setting, including any satellite locations approved by the board.

4 Rules.   Rules adopted by the board to implement this section are routine technical rules as defined in Title 5, chapter 375, subchapter 2-A.

This bill provides the Department of Professional and Financial Regulation, Board of Dental Examiners with the authority to issue, upon presentation of satisfactory credentials and other criteria established by rules adopted by the board, faculty licenses to an applicant who teaches dentistry, dental hygiene and denturism in this State as part of accredited or approved clinical and didactic programs for professional education of dental students, dental residents, dental hygiene students, dental hygiene residents and denturism students. An applicant for a faculty license must hold the required current license within the United States or Canada. Faculty licenses expire after 2 years and are renewable by the board. The board may assess a fee of up to $250 for a faculty license. A faculty license allows the licensee to practice only within the dental school setting and any satellite locations approved by the board.
