| Required Activity | Unit Affected | Local Cost | ||||
| Requires each school administrative unit to approve up to 20 8th-grade students to enroll in a public high school of the students choice. | School | Moderate statewide | ||||
| The required local activities in this bill may represent a State mandate pursuant to the Constitution of Maine. Unless General Fund appropriations are provided to fund at least 90% of the additional costs or a Mandate Preamble is amended to the bill and two-thirds of the members of each House vote to exempt this mandate from the funding requirement, municipalities may not be required to implement these changes. | ||||||
| Fiscal Detail and Notes | ||||||
| This legislation will not increase the total cost of K-12 public education or the State's share of that cost. The additional costs to local school administrative units associated with the application process can not be determined at this time and will depend on the number of applications received. Because this legislation does not cap the number of tuition students that a school administrative unit must accept as a result of school choice, it is unclear whether the amount of tuition a school administrative unit receives for these students will be sufficient to cover the entire cost of educating them. | ||||||
