An Act Regarding Inspection Requirements for Public Safety and Municipal Vehicles Owned by Island Communities

Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine as follows:

Sec. 1. 29-A MRSA §1771  is enacted to read:

§ 1771 Inspection of island authorized emergency vehicles

Notwithstanding any other provision of this chapter, an authorized emergency vehicle that is owned by an island community and that is garaged and operated only on the island is subject to inspection under either subsection 1 or 2, as determined by the island community. As used in this section, "island community" means a municipality or portion of a municipality that is located on an island that is not connected to the mainland by a bridge.

A island community shall require an authorized emergency vehicle under this section to be inspected:

1 Five years or 500 miles.   At a licensed inspection station every 5 years or every 500 miles of use; or
2 Onsite inspections.   Annually by a licensed inspection mechanic at the location where the authorized emergency vehicle is customarily kept. A mechanic performing an inspection under this subsection shall drive the vehicle as part of the inspection.

This bill allows an island community to require an emergency vehicle that is garaged and operated only on the island to be inspected every 5 years or every 500 miles of use or annually by a licensed inspection mechanic at the location where the vehicle is customarily kept.
