An Act To Waive the Fee for Attendance at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy for Former Military Police Officers

Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine as follows:

Sec. 1. 25 MRSA §2804-C, sub-§6  is enacted to read:

6 Fee waiver for veterans of the United States Armed Forces who served as military police officers.   Notwithstanding any provision of law to the contrary, a fee may not be charged for the course required by this section if the person:
A Is an honorably discharged veteran of the United States Armed Forces who served as a military police officer and has been hired for or received a conditional offer of full-time employment as a law enforcement officer;
B Has been certified by the board as satisfying all preservice training requirements under section 2804-B; and
C Is a graduate of a formal United States Armed Forces police academy or training program and was authorized by law to engage in or supervise the prevention or detection of any violation of law or investigation, prosecution or incarceration of any person for any violation of law and had statutory powers of arrest or apprehension under the United States Uniform Code of Military Justice or successor military judicial code and meets the following criteria:

(1) Has 5 years' supervisory experience in military law enforcement in a military pay grade of at least E-5 or its equivalent; or

(2) Has 3 years' active service experience in military law enforcement and has completed an associate degree or higher in criminal justice from an accredited postsecondary educational institution.

SUMMARY

This bill provides a waiver of the fee charged for the basic training course at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy for honorably discharged veterans of the United States Armed Forces who served as military police officers and who have been hired for or have received conditional offers of full-time employment as law enforcement officers if the veterans' military experience and education meet certain criteria.
