An Act To Promote Retention and Recruitment of Judicial Marshals and Sergeants
Emergency preamble. Whereas, acts and resolves of the Legislature do not become effective until 90 days after adjournment unless enacted as emergencies; and
Whereas, this legislation requires the upward adjustment of the salary schedules of judicial marshals and sergeants beginning on or about July 1, 2017; and
Whereas, the 90-day period may not expire until after the date the upward salary adjustment is required to begin; and
Whereas, in the judgment of the Legislature, these facts create an emergency within the meaning of the Constitution of Maine and require the following legislation as immediately necessary for the preservation of the public peace, health and safety; now, therefore,
Sec. 1. Adjustment of salary schedules for judicial marshals and sergeants in fiscal year 2017-18. Notwithstanding any other provision of law, effective at the beginning of the pay period commencing closest to July 1, 2017, the salary schedules must be adjusted upward by 20% for a position classified as Judicial Marshal or Judicial Sergeant in the judicial branch that is included in the law enforcement bargaining unit or the supervisory services bargaining unit.
Emergency clause. In view of the emergency cited in the preamble, this legislation takes effect when approved.
SUMMARY
This bill provides for a 20% upward adjustment in the salary schedules of judicial marshals and judicial sergeants in the judicial branch beginning with the pay period commencing closest to July 1, 2017.
