This bill enacts
a process for patient-directed care at the end of life for Maine residents
who are adults who are terminally ill and who have been determined to have a
limited life expectancy. Specific to the Department of Health and Human
Services (DHHS), the bill requires rulemaking to provide for safe disposal of
medications that are prescribed for end-of-life care and that are not used by
the patient and requires physicians to promptly notify DHHS regarding
compliance with the requirements of this bill. Currently, DHHS does not
license or monitor physicians for compliance of regulations, so there would
be a cost to implement this function. No estimate is made at this time on
whether DHHS can take on this function without additional staffing or technological
changes. OFPR will work with DHHS to estimate any costs. |
