Amend the resolution in Art. IV in Pt. First in §5 in the 7th line from the bottom (page 1, line 20 in L.D.) by inserting after the following: "forthwith" the following: ' together with the ballots cast if the Secretary of State so elects'

Amend the resolution in Art. IV in Pt. First in §5 in the 5th and 6th lines from the bottom (page 1, lines 21 and 22 in L.D.) by striking out the following: " , together with the ballots cast if the Governor so elects,"

Amend the resolution in Art. IV in Pt. Second in §3 in the last line (page 1, line 34 in L.D.) by inserting after the following: "forthwith" the following: ' together with the ballots cast if the Secretary of State so elects'

Amend the resolution in Art. IV in Pt. Second in §4 in the 3rd line (page 1, line 37 in L.D.) by striking out the following: " , together with the ballots cast if the Governor so elects"

Amend the resolution in Art. IV in Pt. Third by striking out all of §24 and inserting the following:

Section 24. Method for tabulating votes for Representatives, Senators and Governor. The Legislature, or the people acting pursuant to Section 18, shall, by proper enactment, predetermine the methods for sorting and counting votes cast for Representatives, Senators and Governor and the method for determining who has been elected to these offices.

Amend the resolution by striking the question (page 2, lines 38 to 41 in L.D.) and inserting the following:

"Do you favor amending the Constitution of Maine to allow the Legislature, or the people by using the direct initiative, to determine the method for determining the winners of general elections for Governor, State Senators and State Representatives?"

This amendment allows the Legislature, or the people using the direct initiative, to establish the method for determining the winners of general elections for Governor, State Senators and State Representatives. The amendment also clarifies that, after local officials form records of the votes received in a general election for Representatives, Senators and Governor, the ballots may be forwarded to the Secretary of State at the direction of the Secretary of State.
