An Act To Promote Academic Achievement through Hunger Relief for Maine Children
Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine as follows:
Sec. 1. 20-A MRSA §6602, sub-§1, ¶A, as enacted by PL 2007, c. 539, Pt. IIII, §1, is amended to read:
A. A public school shall participate in the National School Lunch Program in accordance with 7 Code of Federal Regulations, Part 210 (2007) and provide Type A meals as determined by the United States Department of Agriculture. A public school participating in the National School Lunch Program pursuant to this paragraph shall provide lunch at no cost to all students who are eligible for free and reduced-price meals. The State shall provide funding equal to the difference between the federal reimbursement for a reduced-price lunch and the federal reimbursement for a free lunch.

This bill directs the State to fund the difference between the federal reimbursements for reduced-price and free lunches in order to provide all children from families with incomes under 185% of the federal poverty level free lunch at school.
