§3853. Check or receipt for property delivered for safekeeping
Every guest and every person intending to be a guest of any hotel, inn or boardinghouse in this State, upon delivering any baggage or other articles of property of the guest to the proprietor of the hotel, inn or boardinghouse or to the proprietor's employees for safekeeping elsewhere than in the room assigned to that guest, shall demand, and the hotel or inn proprietor shall give, a check or receipt for the baggage or other property to evidence the fact of the delivery. No proprietor is liable for the loss of or injury to the baggage or other property of the guest, unless the guest has actually delivered the baggage or other property to the proprietor or employees for safekeeping, or unless the loss or injury occurs through the negligence of the proprietor or employees in the hotel or inn.
