| Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine as follows: |

| | Sec. 1. 32 MRSA c. 31, sub-c. VII is enacted to read: |

| REGISTERED NURSE FIRST ASSISTANT |
|
| | As used in this subchapter, unless the context otherwise | indicates, the following terms have the following meanings. |
|
| | 1.__Perioperative nursing.__"Perioperative nursing" means a | practice of nursing in which the nurse provides preoperative, | intraoperative and postoperative nursing care to surgical | patients. |
|
| | 2.__Recognized program.__"Recognized program" means a program | that: |
|
| A.__Addresses all content of the core curriculum for the | registered nurse first assistant as established by the | Association of Operating Room Nurses or its successor | organization; and |
|
| B.__Includes 2 semesters of study in an accredited college | or university with nursing instruction and clinical | internship programs. |
|
| | 3.__Registered nurse first assistant. "Registered nurse first | assistant" or "RNFA," means a person who meets the qualifications | listed in section 2268. |
|
| | 1.__Qualifications.__A registered nurse first assistant is any | person who: |
|
| A.__Is licensed as a registered nurse under this chapter; |
|
| B.__Is experienced in perioperative nursing; and |
|
| C.__Has successfully completed and holds a certificate from | a recognized program. |
