Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine as follows:

 
Sec. 1. 32 MRSA c. 31, sub-c. VII is enacted to read:

 
SUBCHAPTER VII

 
REGISTERED NURSE FIRST ASSISTANT

 
§2267.__Definitions

 
As used in this subchapter, unless the context otherwise
indicates, the following terms have the following meanings.

 
1.__Perioperative nursing.__"Perioperative nursing" means a
practice of nursing in which the nurse provides preoperative,
intraoperative and postoperative nursing care to surgical
patients.

 
2.__Recognized program.__"Recognized program" means a program
that:

 
A.__Addresses all content of the core curriculum for the
registered nurse first assistant as established by the
Association of Operating Room Nurses or its successor
organization; and

 
B.__Includes 2 semesters of study in an accredited college
or university with nursing instruction and clinical
internship programs.

 
3.__Registered nurse first assistant. "Registered nurse first
assistant" or "RNFA," means a person who meets the qualifications
listed in section 2268.

 
§2268.__Qualifications

 
1.__Qualifications.__A registered nurse first assistant is any
person who:

 
A.__Is licensed as a registered nurse under this chapter;

 
B.__Is experienced in perioperative nursing; and

 
C.__Has successfully completed and holds a certificate from
a recognized program.

 
§2269.__Institutional powers

 
Each health care institution, as defined in Title 22, chapter
405, must establish specific procedures for the
