Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine as follows:

 
Sec. 1. 20-A MRSA §4801, sub-§2, as enacted by PL 1981, c. 693, §§5
and 8, is amended to read:

 
2. Equal terms; school year. A school administrative unit
shall operate all its schools so that their regular annual
sessions are as equal in length as practicable. The first day of
classes of the school year must be after Labor Day.__
Extracurricular activities may take place before Labor Day.

 
Sec. 2. 20-A MRSA §10006 is enacted to read:

 
§10006.__School year

 
The school year for all public postsecondary educational
institutions must commence after Labor Day.__Extracurricular
activities may take place before Labor Day.

 
SUMMARY

 
This bill requires all public schools including postsecondary
educational institutions to begin classes after Labor Day.
Extracurricular activities may take place before Labor Day.
