| (1) Reasons why students drop out of school; |
|
| (2) Maintenance of continuing contacts with recent | dropouts in order to extend opportunities for alternate | educational programs, counseling and referral; |
|
| (3) Education of teachers and administrators about the | dropout problem; |
|
| (4) Use of human services programs to help dropouts; |
|
| (5) The school administrative unit's policies on | suspension, expulsion and other disciplinary action; | and |
|
| (6) Discriminatory practices and attitudes within the | school administrative unit. including those of other | students; |
|
| (7)__Dropouts' family situations; |
|
| (8)__The school administrative unit's relationship with | law enforcement agencies; and |
|
| (9)__The effects of drug and alcohol use on the dropout | problem. |

| | Sec. 15. 20-A MRSA c. 211, sub-c. III-A is enacted to read: |

| SUPERVISION FOR SUSPENDED OR EXPELLED STUDENTS |
|
| | As used in this subchapter, unless the context otherwise | indicates, the following terms have the following meanings. |
|
| | 1.__Department.__"Department" means the Department of Human | Services. |
|
| | 2.__Removed student.__"Removed student" means a juvenile of | school age who is being or has been expelled, suspended or placed | on early release from school or who is an habitual truant or | dropout. |
|
| | 3.__Juvenile in need of services.__"Juvenile in need of | services" means a juvenile of school age who has been expelled | from school, who has been suspended from school for more than 10% | of the days of the current semester of the student's school |

|
