26. School administrative unit. "School administrative unit"
means the state-approved unit of school administration and includes
a municipal school unit, school administrative district, community
school district, charter school or any other municipal or quasi-
municipal corporation responsible for operating or constructing
public schools, except that it does not include an applied
technology region.

 
Sec. 4. 20-A MRSA §202, sub-§§16 and 17, as enacted by PL 1981, c. 693,
§§5 and 8, are amended to read:

 
16. Other entities. Other entities authorized by the
Legislature; and

 
17. Other bureaus. Any other bureau the commissioner
establishes.; and

 
Sec. 5. 20-A MRSA §202, sub-§18 is enacted to read:

 
18.__Charter schools.__Any charter schools.

 
Sec. 6. 20-A MRSA c. 112 is enacted to read:

 
CHAPTER 112

 
CHARTER SCHOOL AUTHORITY

 
§2431.__Authority established

 
The Charter School Authority, referred to in this chapter as
the "authority," is established as an independent agency of State
Government to carry out the purposes of this chapter.

 
§2432.__Membership of authority

 
1.__Membership.__The authority consists of 24 voting members
and a number of other nonvoting members determined appropriate by
the authority, as follows:

 
A.__Three members from public schools, one of whom
represents school superintendents, one of whom represents
teachers and one of whom represents parent-teacher
organizations;

 
B.__Two members from private schools, one of whom represents
nonsectarian schools and one of whom represents sectarian
schools;

 
C.__One member from the home schooling community;
