Maine Legislative History Research

- Description: This course will provide step-by-step instruction on how to compile the legislative history of Maine laws. It will also cover the varying uses of legislative history by all three branches of government as well as the Maine Supreme Judicial Court’s recognition of appropriate sources of legislative history. It will end with an introduction to statutory history, which will serve as a jumping off point for future courses.

Maine Statutory History Research

- Description: This course will pick up where Maine Legislative History Research leaves off. It will cover the relationship between session laws and the statutes, the distinction between legislative history and statutory history, previous revisions of the Maine Revised Statutes, and tracing current statutes back decades or, sometimes, a century or more.

Artificial Intelligence in the Workplace: Legal Implications of Using AI in Employment Decisions

- Description: In this CLE, the presenter will present emerging issues and trends of any employer’s use of artificial intelligence for employment decision making. Discussion will include the new Equal Employment Opportunities Commission’s new Strategic Enforcement Plan and other attempts from state and local governments to combat the growing trend of bias and discrimination that is weaving its way into employers hiring, promotion, and firing decisions. Finally, this CLE will discuss the implications and ethical responsibilities of lawyers have surrounding this topic as well as how lawyers should advise their employer clients.

Online Legal Research and Resources

- Description: The many ways technology can aid attorneys in locating the best and most on point statutes, caselaw, secondary materials and all relevant materials can be overwhelming. The comments to the model rules of professional conduct governing attorneys state that “to maintain competency a lawyer should keep abreast…[of] the benefits and risks associated with relevant technology.” The goal of this course is to assist attorneys in navigating online legal research, so they feel more confident and competent when researching subjects important to their work. This CLE is an interactive scenario-based course that considers the daily tasks that attendees may be required to perform.

Diving Deeper Into Legal Research Potential

- Description: American businessman and former CEO of Microsoft Steve Ballmer once stated, “The number one benefit of information technology is that it empowers people to do what they want to do. It lets people be creative. It lets people be productive. It lets people learn things they didn't think they could learn before, and so in a sense it is all about potential.” The goal of this course today is to harnessing the potential as attorneys to learn things about online legal research you didn’t think you could learn before. This course is going to be a deeper dive into online legal research. According to the model rules of professional conduct, attorneys need to maintain competency, and a component of maintaining competency is to keep abreast of the benefits and risks of relevant technology. Cryptocurrency is becoming a new language, in an array of fields such as banking, investment, and the law. This technology and the various ways to access the information impact how attorneys practice and uphold the law. Cryptocurrency also brings forth more issues and new laws that your clients may face. Ethical Legal Research with Generative AI
