Private Sales of Used Cars
What is Maine's Law on Private Sales of Used Cars
Private, non-dealer sales of automobiles do not appear to be addressed by Maine statute. If you are having problems with a used car which you purchased through a private sale with another individual, litigation in small claims court might be your only option. The legal publisher NOLO has compiled a guide on this topic:
- Used Vehicles Cases Against Private Parties in Small Claims Court: http://www.nolo.com/legal-encyclopedia/free-books/small-claims-book/chapter17-4.html. For a complete excerpt from this publication, including sample demand and witness letters, please contact the Law Library.
Up to date through the 2nd Regular Session of the 132nd Maine Legislature.
